Engine Runs Rough, Blows Smoke And Stalls, After Cold Start Up.

Hi everyone,

I've developed a cold start problem with my 99 4JX1 Jackaroo, i was hoping someone may be able to help me with.

At cold start up, the engine will crank for the usual period of time.
It will then start and idle fine for the first 2 seconds.
It will then start to run rough, like it's dropped a cylinder and is now only running on 3 cylinders.
It now blows clouds of white/grey smoke and after a couple of seconds, the engine stalls.
Try to restart the engine and it cranks for ages, all the while continuing to blow clouds of smoke.
Eventually the engine does run with the aid of acceleration, runs rough and still blowing clouds of smoke.
I'm finding I have to keep the engine revs up for it to keep running.
After a few seconds of high revs, the engine starts to run smooth, like it's back to running on all 4 cylinders, the smoke dissipates and it now idles fine.
It will now run fine all day, at least until it has had time to cool.

- The glow plugs have been replaced.
- The 760cca battery cranks the engine fine and is in good condition.
- The electrical connector beside the dipstick tube is kept free of oil.
- The components at the back of the high pressure oil pump are intact.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for your time.
Adam.
