crank angle sensor

would a faulty crank sensor cause pinging? it started a few months ago but got
worse the last couple of weeks. other than the pinging it runs fine and isn't hard to start, fuel economy doesn't appear to be any worse.I put some premium fuel in today and no more pinging, any help appreciated.
