Jacks turbo

Hi everyone. I haven't been on this site for a long time so long in fact I forgot my username and password so I have reregistered
And I am in need of advice.

I have a 2001 Jackaroo with the 4JX1 diesel with 234,000km

The turbo on Jack decided to give up the ghost on us on a trip and had to be towed home by RACQ. Uphill we could manage to get 5kmh with lots smoke downhill 50kmh.
The turbo made a loud noise best described as high pitched squeal.

I have pulled the air intake hose off the turbo and found the fan shaft moves about 3mm laterally.
So with my powers of deduction I would say the turbo is..... Hang on what's the correct technical term..... That's right stuffed.
There was also a lot of oil in intake of turbo.

Spoke to a mechanic who lives up the road from me and he quoted $900 to rebuild the turbo which I think is a bit high. Have found turbos on eBay for around $400.

The question is have anyone on this site replaced a turbo with one from eBay ?
Where they a straight changeover or did they have to be modified?

Another question does anyone have a preloved usable turbo for sale?
