I have added a pair of 7inch x 10 inch Slam bags to the suspension and removed the big load spring in the rear for now but intend to remove all of them later and make it like the Jackaroo only with bags instead of springs. I have to make a custom steel fuel tank first.
A air ride compressor and remote control valve system has been added so the spring rate is always variable and can be instantly adjusts each slam bag individually according to the load even if its to one side the car rides level and rides much smoother than it ever did
before.
The great thing about the air ride 72000 kit is when your creeping over large ruts or rocks slowly the control unit instantly senses a wheel with no weight on it as the pressure has reduced and pumps that side up until the load on each wheel is equal and when that wheel hits level ground it lets that wheel down so the vehicle is level and gives equal traction. My intentions is to add a air tank to speed this action up as I can see it being a benefit, Any one with a out of date fire extinguisher lol
There are a lot of kits around that do this job but none of them use 7 inch bags
Most of the airbag kits for sale do not have internal bump stops and you can not legally install these kits in place of the factory bump stops without bags that have internal bump stops. some kits leave the bump stop in place and fit them inside the chassis rails but these fowl with the abs harness and they also do not have 10 inches of stroke like mine has.
I chose Slam bags for there renowned strength and of the thought if the yanks can run nitrogen systems at 250psi on the same slam bags and bounce Cadillac's 3 foot off the ground no 4x4 work I do will ever bust them
When empty I only run 10 psi in the bags and the back is 2 inches higher than standard and the spring leaves are separating and hold no load static. Its only when i hit a bump do the leafs do any work . This has given more active rear suspension travel and a much softer les painful ride.
I intend to do a mod to the front with overhead bags on the top of the upper control arms later allowing me to transfer the load to the bags and wind off the tension on the torsion bars.
I realize some of you will think why don't I just get a more comfortable vehicle ?
I own this one I despise the idea of loosing 15-20 grand trading this in on a new coiled 4x4 or swapping it for an old one so I will make this one comfortable as I keep my vehicles for more than a decade any money spent will be less than I would loose if I traded.
For a load test I placed a tarp in the back and filled it level it with water until it overflowed. The bags only needed 55 psi to take all the weight off the springs and for the car to sit level . The fella 2 doors up with the same car was shaking his head in disbelief as his drags its bum with his tools in the back.
