HOLDEN JACKAROO Is the 6VD1 3.2l engine interference or not?

Hi, I have a Holdan Jackaroo 1996 with a 6VD1 3.2l engine. Unfortunately it seems to have broken the timing belt. I took it to local mechanic where initially he told me it was a non interference engine, so I told him to go ahead & replace timing belt. A few days later he rang me & said it was an interference motor (according to VACC). He's not wanting to fix as he says there are too many problems if engine has been damaged. When it first happened, car wouldn't start & I could hear bottom end of motor spinning freely. No clunks or bangs occurred. I have done some research on the net. Some say it is NOT INTERFERENCE!
I'm confused, can anyone clarify that it is interference or not?
Also.... Mechanic has said it would be best to replace engine. I've located a HSV 1993 Jackaroo which is an automatic. It seems to have the same motor. Can I have this engine put in my car which is a manual. If so, what is involved?
If these seem like silly questions, I'm sorry. I'm not a mechanic.
Just trying to figure out what's the best way to go to have my jackaroo fixed.
Advise would be appreciated. I live in small country town, with limited mechanics around.
