ABS Module backwards compatibility

Hi all,
First time posting, couldn't find an answer in any other posts so hoping someone can help me.
My 1999 Frontera has developed ABS issues, pump runs continuously when module fuse is engaged. I've got a quote to recondition my current module, but a 2002 unit is going cheap on eBay. Are the 2002 units compatible? Has anyone had this issue and solved without reco or new module?
