Hi all, this looks like a great forum.
I'm looking at a 92 XS Jack 'shortie' as a tug for my Heaslip soft floor rear fold camper, so I can take it places I can't get with my 95 Subaru Outback. Short term this will include the Victorian 'high country', long term the 'big lap', including Canning Stock Route.
The specs of the Jack are:
1992 XS model
3.2 l V6, Petrol
Hi/ low range, factory LSD
165,000 kilometres
2 door, Short Wheel Base (SWB)
40mm lift
Ironman AT tires with good tread
Alloy bullbar
Cold Air Con, cruise control, power mirrors.
Custom overhead console, with Uniden UHF, and roof mounted 7 inch flip down screen (connected to the DVD player)
LED lights in front and back
Custom rear drawer system
Hayman Reece towbar
Rear spotlight and reversing camera
Rhino roof racks
Extra 12v power on the dash and in the boot
Switches for spot, fog and rear lights
1 set of 6 inch Narva spotlights, one set of SCA 6 inch spotlights, 1 set of 2 inch fog lights,
GME UHF Antenna
Air compressor under the drivers seat
Sony CD/ MP3/ AM/ FM/ DVD Player, with detachable face and remote.
Pioneer front speakers
7 inch flip out in dash screen , connected to the DVD player and a reversing camera.
I'll admit to not knowing anything much about Jacks, however my long term mechanic tells me that they were a reliable and much under-rated vehicle.
It seems to 'fit the bill' from my perspective, in terms of being a better bet than the 'big boys' for city driving, while still being able to go virtually anywhere off-road. The price point also lets me justify buying it as a tow tug.
My immediate questions are:
1/. What are the 'known issues' (if any) with this model?
2/. Known spots to look for body rust?
3/. How does the SWB perform as a tow vehicle for a trailer in the 800kg - 1 tonne range?
4/. What sort of fuel consumpion should I expect from highway driving - as Jack might see a bit of service on my daily commute from Melb to Geelong (aginst the traffic flow, not in the traffic jam)?
5/. Is it practical to fit dual fuel to the 'shortie'? i.e. where would I fit the tank?
6/. How difficult is it to fit a front locker, which I imagine would compliment the rear LSD nicely, given the obvious limitations of front torsion bar suspension travel. (Not that I have anything against torsion bars, as my 'first love' was a Beetle...)
I'd also be interested in hearing of other forum members experiences with this / similar model of the Jack.
Cheers,
Barry
